Dovecote Viognier is made to be an expressive yet graceful and polished rendition of this aromatic varietal. Bright pale straw, the 2018 Dovecote Estate Viognier begins with a subtle perfume of night jasmine, wet stone, and orange blossoms. In the glass a sensual palate of star fruit, pomelo, and lemon curd is framed by a zesty acid-driven structure. It transitions through a full and silky finish with lingering crushed rock minerality and jasmine essence.
Classic matches such as oysters, scallops, and poultry are wonderful, yet this Viognier can stand up to and complement the more challenging dishes such as grilled artichokes, Indian and Chinese cuisine, Japanese ramen, and spiced Latin American fare.
Quail Valley Vineyard is a single-acre vineyard planted on rocky alluvial soil in 1998 within a relatively cool and sheltered area of the Los Olivos District AVA in Santa Barbara County. It lies sheltered within a narrow valley that permits enough warmth to ripen the fruit slowly and retain acidity, while also limiting harsh exposure that can mute aromatics. We farm and harvest the vineyard entirely by hand with no machinery or power equipment.
Grapes were hand harvested at night on September 9, 2018. The fruit was then pressed whole cluster and racked directly to stainless steel for fermentation (no MLF). It was bottled March 2019 and is ready to enjoy now and over the coming 2-5 years.
